Warranty vs. insurance

Warranty vs. insurance

Warranty vs insurance: what you absolutely need to know

Warranty and insurance: two terms that are often used as if they meant the same thing. However, they work very differently — especially when it comes to pools. Before making a claim, it's important to understand what's actually covered.

*Note: Always check your insurance contract to know exactly what your clauses are; the texts here are for information purposes only and only your contract can specify according to your case.

As we know, when you use a warranty, human error is not an excuse: if you have missed a coffee on your computer, do not try to call the store or the computer company back to claim a refund!

But in damage insurance, it's a different matter.

Human error is covered by the majority of insurance contracts. Moreover, if you contact them about the coffee that escaped on the computer, you will probably be entitled to a settlement.

For pools, it's the same thing. Most insurance contracts cover human error, for example, a canvas that is burned after a person drops the chlorine bucket in the pool. They also cover accidents; sudden and instant things like a BBQ that ends up in the pool after a strong wind and pierces the canvas.

On the other hand, the most common EXCLUSION from an insurance contract is usury. Also, the majority of settlements will take depreciation into account. For example, a 10-year-old pool liner that is starting to bleach, or a 15-year-old concrete sidewalk that has cracks, will not be covered by your insurance company.

In summary, it is to your advantage to maintain the pool and your belongings properly, in order to extend their lifespan, but if you encounter “bad luck”, a call to your home insurance company could be beneficial.
